At Jericho Primary School, we believe Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) enables our children to become healthy, safe, independent and responsible members of society. It aims to help our pupils to understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We want our children to have no limits to their ambitions and grow up into confident, resilient and respectful individuals. PSHE is at the heart of our school ethos. We want our core values to be represented in our children: achievement, adventure, creativity, nurture and respect. We all believe that “we are growing the hearts and minds of today to build the communities of tomorrow” thus we provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. The PSHE curriculum enables children to develop the skills to make informed choices about wellbeing, health and relationships both on and offline. We want children to have knowledge when facing challenging or difficult situations and to know how and when to ask for help and who and where to go to for support. We want our children to become global citizens, with a strong sense of responsibility for themselves, their peers and the wider world.
Curriculum Intentions
- The intent of our PSHE curriculum is to deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all and protects the innocence of children while preparing them for the world in which they live.
- We aim to equip our children with not only the minimum statutory requirements of the PSHE National Curriculum but with the knowledge and skills to prepare them for the ever changing world in which they are growing up. We want children to be a global citizens now and in their future roles within a global community. Their knowledge of their world, locally, nationally and globally should give them the confidence to tackle moral, social and cultural issues.
- Our PSHE curriculum should provide children with opportunities to reflect on values and influences (from peers, social media, faith and culture) developing an understanding of shared and different attitudes.
- We intend to develop an understanding of different relationships and discuss relevant issues preparing pupils for life in modern Britain at an age appropriate level, including friendships, families, consent, relationship abuse, sexual exploitation and safe relationships online.
- All teaching should promote equality, challenging all forms of stereotyping, discrimination, harassment and victimisation, meeting the legal duty on schools as set out in the Equalities Act 2010 and the nine protected characteristics of:
- Age
- Disability
- Gender reassignment
- Marriage and civil partnership
- Pregnancy and maternity
- Race
- Religion and/or belief
- Sex
- Sexual orientation
- Children will be taught and encouraged to use precise age appropriate vocabulary specific to the area of learning in PSHE. (Our vocabulary progression document is below).
- Acquisition of knowledge and skills which enables children to access the wider curriculum.
- A wealth of enrichment activities further support and complement our PSHE curriculum. These include residential trips, school visits, visitors, community events, sporting and other clubs and events. We have targeted nurture groups and 1:1 sessions for individuals who need additional support. Personal and Social skills are at the heart of our school values and are the focus of school assemblies, whole school reward systems and the numerous roles and responsibilities we offer to pupils such as class buddies, health and safety officers or Head pupil. Children are actively involved in making decisions and discussing issues surrounding their health, friendships and wellbeing through the School Council and other pupil voice activities.
